All over
the world, Auschwitz name is known as a symbol of terror, genocide, and the
Holocaust. The first camp - 'Auschwitz I' was established by Nazis in
1940, in the suburbs of Oswiecim Town (in German Auschwitz) which is
located approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) west from Krakow.
Initially it was a labour camp for Polish political prisoners but soon
after Auschwitz complex became the site where Nazis killed about 1,5
million people, mainly Jews as well as, Poles, Russian POWs, Gypsies
and prisoners of other nationalities.
The majority of the victims of Auschwitz were killed in 'Auschwitz II -
Birkenau' - the second camp established by Nazis in Brzezinka village
located 3 kilometers from first camp. It was the largest concentration
camp created by Nazis which is known as a death factory.
After the War, Polish government decided to turn both camps into a museum and memorial commemorating the victims of Nazism. Nowadays it is a part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
